Google Ads enquiry tracking: what to check before optimising

An advertising enquiry flow connecting an ad, contact form, verified records and an email.

Before using Google Ads results to change a budget, check what the account is counting. A button click, a successfully submitted enquiry and a qualified opportunity are different events.

Google’s conversion measurement guidance explains how actions can be measured. Your business still needs to decide which actions matter and validate the implementation.

Define the business outcome

Write down the actions customers can take: submit a form, call, book an appointment or request a quote. Describe when each action has genuinely succeeded.

For a form, success should usually mean the enquiry was accepted, not that the visitor pressed a button while required fields were missing. A phone-link click does not establish that a conversation happened.

Keep diagnostic actions available where useful, but distinguish them from the outcomes used to judge campaigns.

Draw the measurement path

Map the advert, landing page, form or booking tool, confirmation and staff destination. Include external domains and embedded systems where applicable.

Record which system owns each event and how it reaches the advertising report. This helps identify cases where the same enquiry is counted through more than one implementation.

Check consent handling and your privacy disclosures with the person responsible for them. Do not send personal information into tracking fields simply because a form collects it.

Test ordinary and failed journeys

Use clearly labelled test submissions. Try a valid enquiry, an invalid form, a repeated click and a confirmation-page refresh. Follow the relevant platform testing guidance and allow for reporting delays.

For a hypothetical installer, a test might show that the website displays success but the enquiry never reaches the office. Advertising measurement would then hide an operational problem unless the full path is checked.

Keep screenshots, timestamps and expected outcomes so a developer or advertising specialist can reproduce a fault.

Review quality before optimisation

Compare recorded enquiries with the business’s actual records. Note spam, duplicates, unsuitable locations and genuine prospects. Avoid treating every tracked action as equally valuable.

A discrepancy may come from measurement, consent, attribution or a broken handover. Investigate before concluding that a campaign has suddenly improved or deteriorated.

DonutLabs’ Google Ads and PPC service can help connect campaign reporting with the enquiry process. Bring the event definitions and recent test results so budget decisions rest on a clearer picture of what is happening.
